some of the people at my church think I am a bit nutty - for a number of reasons actually ... one being that I switch my office around every few months & play my music too loud - both are true but I don't the time to explain ... you know ... the neurotic intricacies of my inner child ... blah blah blah
anyway ... I play a few different strats & telecasters but the 2 above are replicas of older ones that I own & am scared to bring out & play ...
so ... here is the thing ... I get asked about why I play different guitars at different times ...
well ... eric clapton has been the reason I started playing guitar ... I heard lay down sally when I was 7 or 8 & I loved that sparkly strat sound ... he plays the black & white with maple neck
I grew up on bryan adams in canada & he played a black strat with a rosewood neck on the video run to you in 1984 & I was hooked
I listen to john mayer the most now ... primarily because he actually contemplates as he plays ... he is a composer - not just a song writer
I have used his song belief in one of my talks ... the lyrics are profound
plus ... he can stinkin' rip on that strat - which is also like my black rosewood one
back to the thesis ... the simple answer to why I play different strats is ... rosewood & maple ... if you notice the difference in the above pic you will see the dark & light wood on the fretboard
rosewood is soft & produces a warmer sonic feel
maple is a harder wood & yields a sparkly rhythm or searing / ripping solo sound
if you need a sparkly feel that breaks through the mix - maple
if you need a warm rhythm or a jazzy/les paul solo - rosewood
... in ministry it is not usually what is right or wrong, but rather ... what is right or wrong for the situation ... not a situational ethic, BUT situationally what is the highest good for this person? ... what is situationally the foremost medium to serve this person?
to be candid, since I was 17, almost daily I have prayed for discernment & wisdom far beyond my years ... only so I could best undergird & serve anyone God brings in my path ... the people God loves ... that is - everyone
... so it's not ... am I going to serve? - but rosewood or maple
